Mr. Melonhead: Graphics Editing With Adobe Photoshop

Objective

To learn some basic graphics editing skills in Adobe Photoshop.

Skills

I will show you in class how to perform the editing tasks you need to complete this assignment.

  • selections: Marquees (rectangular, oval, lasso), Magic Wand, Lasso
  • selections: add/subtract from a selection
  • editing: move, copy, delete, paste, crop, change colors, transform (size, rotation, flip)
  • layers: create from Cut or Copy
  • layers: create, rename, change stack order, view/hiding, delete
  • text: add text, bevel and emboss

Mr. Melonhead

Follow the directions carefully. Each part should end up on its own layer. Each layer should be named according to what is on it.

Feel free to experiment with the tools and make Mr. Melonhead look different than this example, but be sure to do at least the things described below. Have fun with it!

  1. Make a new folder on your flash drive for this lab. Save this Photoshop image to the new lab folder: Parts.psd.

  2. Open Parts in Photoshop and put Mr. Melonhead together as follows:

    • Melon - the head
Rename the Background layer to Melonhead. Copy the melon to a new layer (using Layer via Copy). Name the layer Melon and remove any extra white area from that layer. (One way to do this is to select the white with the magic wand, and press Delete.)

    • Carrot slice - the eyes
To select the carrot slice, experiment to see which selection tool will work best. Once selected, copy the carrot slice to a new layer. Name the layer Left Eye. Move the left eye onto the head and remove any extra white area. Copy the layer and move the copy for the other eye. Name this layer Right Eye.

    • Kiwi - the mouth
For each part, experiment to see which selection tool will work best. Be sure to copy each part to a new layer and name the layers. Then move each part to the head, removing extra white if necessary.

    • Pear - the nose

    • Pasta - the bow tie
A good way to select this is to start with the Magnetic Lasso Tool on the rounded part and press ALT during as you continue to drag on the jagged edge. (This switches temporarily to the Polygon Lasso where you can click the mouse to make straight lines.)
Scale the bow tie to make it thinner vertically.

    • Mushroom - the hat
Trim the bottom of the mushroom so that it seems to sit on the head.

    • Grapefruit - the ears
Only use the inside part of the grapefruit, not the peel. Reduce the size of the ear and move it into place. Copy the ear and flip it for the other ear (ie. use Flip on the menu under, Edit / Transform). Move the ear layers beneath the melon layer so they stick out from the head.

    • Radishes - the eyebrows
Move the first eyebrow into position. Copy it and flip for the other eyebrow.

    • Blueberry - the iris (colored part) of the eye
After you make a copy of the iris, name the layer Left Iris. Move it onto the left eye and change the color of the iris to some other color (use Image / Adjustments / Hue-Saturation). Copy the iris you just colored to a new layer, name it Right Iris, and move it to the other eye.

  3. Crop the image so that only the Melonhead face remains.

  4. Add your name (first and last) using the Horizontal Type Tool. On the Layer Palette set Bevel and Emboss using the Add a Layer Style button.

  5. Save your image and close it.

  6. Rename your Parts file using the normal pattern: John Smith Lab 7 Melon. Use the Drop Box to submit it.
