Summary
You will gather a number of files from different places, rename them, organize them into folders, put them all into one ZIP file, and email that ZIP file to me as an attachment.
Part 1: Gather the ten files.
-
Create a new folder for all the labs for this class on your flash drive. (Call it Nature or CSCI104 or something else you can easily remember.) I will refer to this folder as your class folder.
-
In your class folder, create another new folder for this lab called Lab 1 or Zip or something similar. I will refer to this folder as your lab folder. For each lab you work on, you should have a different lab folder stored in your class folder.
-
I sent you an email with subject: Files for Lab 1 with two attachments (pictures of Alexander the Great and a Philippine Sampan). Save them in your lab folder.
-
Save this picture (the big picture, not the little thumbnail) in your lab folder:
-
Save this Word document in your lab folder:
0877776jwiiuytq.doc
-
Create a new document in Microsoft Word. Go to www.biblegateway.com (or another site) and search for a verse which has been significant in your life. Paste the verse into your Word document and save it in your lab folder.
-
Create a new document in Microsoft Word. Type in a famous quote. You can search the Internet if you want. Include who said it. Save the document in your lab folder using a keyword or two from the quote as the document name.
-
Go to www.google.com and click on Images. Search for and copy four pictures (not thumbnails) as follows:
- a famous modern person (other than Vladimir Putin)
- a famous ancient person (other than Alexander the Great; paintings or drawings are ok)
- a "usual" form of transportation (eg. car, bus, train, etc.)
- an exotic form of transportation (be creative)
Before proceeding, make sure sure you have all ten files in your lab folder.
Part 2: Rename and Reorganize
-
Rename all the files so that they all have names which reflect their contents. The new names you use should make use of upper and lower case, spaces between words, and be consistent with each other as far as words, abbreviations, and numbers:
Examples:
John 3v16 (note that you can't use a : in a filename)
Vladimir Putin
Philippine Sampan
President Olmert
Elephant
Space Shuttle -
In your lab folder, create three subfolders, named People, Transportation and Quotes.
-
In the People folder, create two subfolders named Modern and Ancient.
-
In the Quotes folder, create two subfolders named Bible and the name of the person who said your quote. If you click the Folders button in Windows Explorer, the structure should appear as shown by the red arrow on the left in the picture below if you exand all the folders.
- Move each of the ten files into the correct subfolders.
Step 3: Zip and Email
il
-
In Windows Explorer, browse back to the class folder which contains the lab folder.
-
You can have the computer put all the folders and files you just created into a single package, called a ZIP file: Right-click on the lab folder (eg. Lab1 or Zip or whatever you called it), then click Send To, then Compressed (zipped) Folder.
-
Rename the new ZIP document following to the file-naming pattern for lab assignments. Your window should look like the one above by the red arrow on the right.
(eg. John Smith Lab 1 Zip) -
Check the contents of the ZIP archive by double-clicking on it to open it. Look make sure all the folders and files seem to be correct.
- Use the Drop Box to submit your ZIP file. Be sure your file is named according to the pattern: John Smith Lab 1 Zip.
